Thomas Cook and Brand USA announce multimillion dollar European Partnership Agreement to promote ‘Discover America’ Initiative

Washington, DC - January 13, 2014

Thomas Cook Group and Brand USA, the destination marketing organisation for the United States of America, have today announced a major cooperative marketing agreement aimed at promoting the USA as the world’s leading destination for European visitors.

The multimillion dollar agreement is the biggest media and partnership deal Brand USA has made with a travel retailer in Europe, and is part of a fully integrated omni-channel campaign targeting travel-intenders across Thomas Cook’s platforms from online through to in-store, direct and inflight.

The partnership, which will initially last for three months from its launch in mid-January 2014 and run simultaneously across the UK, Germany, Belgium and the Netherlands, will see Thomas Cook and Brand USA embark on a high-profile, multi-media campaign that fully utilizes all of the holiday company’s consumer and trade touch-points. It will include in-store promotions across Thomas Cook’s retail estate, prominence in brochures, a variety of social media activities and dedicated sign up by Thomas Cook staff to Brand USA’s new agent training tool – the USA Discovery Program; as well as innovative print and digital marketing activity.

Brand USA’s ‘Discover America’ initiative aims to raise awareness of and inspire travel to the USA by highlighting the diversity of experiences available and by ensuring that the USA is top of mind during the holiday consideration process. The partnership will take full advantage of the Thomas Cook Group and its brands – such as Neckerman in Germany - to build pan-European awareness of the individual destinations within the USA and drive visitors to the country.

“This partnership is a powerful combination to stimulate European travel to the U.S., leveraging the full strength of Thomas Cook as an omni-channel retailer,” said Thomas Cook’s Group Head of Media & Partnerships, Stuart Adamson. “The recently-aligned Media and Partnerships team combine the best in both travel expertise and media innovation, and we are looking forward to delivering a fully integrated on and offline campaign that will stimulate further interest from our customers throughout Europe in all that U.S. has to offer.”

With the goal to reinforce interest in traditional getaways, such as Florida, California and other gateway destinations, as well as stimulating further awareness of states - including Texas and Hawaii, and regions, such as the North East which takes in the cities of Boston, Philadelphia, Washington, D.C. and New York. The objective of the ‘Discover America’ campaign is to position the country as a diverse destination with near limitless experiences, highlighting the USA as a fresh and unexpected destination with welcoming and friendly locals.

Brand USA CEO, Christopher Thompson, said: “This fully integrated campaign provides a platform for the U.S. to re-enforce Brand USA’s efforts to deliver programs that increase awareness and enhance the image of the United States. We take great pride in our ability to partner with such an established operator as Thomas Cook, allowing us the opportunity to engage the European market to not only consider visiting the U.S but also enable them to book travel through a trusted operator.”

This major partnership follows the news that Thomas Cook has aligned its online media solutions and tour operator partnerships teams across Europe to create the Thomas Cook Media & Partnerships division. The initiative will bring together media and travel partnerships expertise within the group to deliver best in class marketing and media programmes to partners, suppliers and third party brands.

Long haul travellers continue to visit Thailand during current high season
Wednesday 15 January, 2014   |

Bangkok, 15 January, 2014 – Thailand is welcoming large numbers of tourists from long haul markets, including Europe, the UK and the USA, during the current winter season.

Bookings are continuing to come in from long haul markets for the current winter season despite the ongoing anti-government demonstrations and the subsequent international media coverage in recent weeks, according to surveys conducted between this week and the last by Tourism Authority of Thailand’s (TAT) international offices.

For the UK market, the TAT London office said there had been a number of inquiries in the past week as to whether the anti-government demonstrations would compromise individual travellers’ schedules in the Thai capital.

All inquiries were answered based on the daily updates by the TAT headquarters that it’s mostly business as usual in Bangkok, albeit with some street closures in the rally areas. Rather than cancel their bookings, individual travellers from the UK have opted either to stay at accommodation in areas away from the rally sites, such as on the banks of the Chao Phraya River, or reduced the duration of stay in Bangkok for a longer stay in other Thai destinations.

Likewise, surveys with major tour operators in the UK found that bookings for Thailand have been diverted to other beach destinations such as Phuket, Krabi and Ko Samui.

The TAT New York office also reported its surveys with major tour operators in Canada and the East side of the USA found that bookings for Thailand remain intact for the most part. On the West coast of the USA, the TAT Los Angeles office reported similar survey results for the tourist markets in Western USA and Latin America (Brazil and Argentina), but noted a slow pace of bookings from the Chinese American market for the upcoming Chinese New Year holiday in Thailand.

Meanwhile, the TAT Stockholm, Frankfurt and Rome offices have reported a “status quo” for flights from their respective markets. Thai Airways International and major tour operators are allowing a change of routing for travellers wishing to avoid Bangkok. All three offices reported a minimal cancellation of 1-2 per cent while the Frankfurt office said new bookings for Thailand continued to flow in from the German market.

The TAT attributed the result to factual news coverage, saying that many big-name international media agencies have tagged the demonstrations as a “festive-like gathering.”

Mr. Thawatchai Arunyik, the Governor of the Tourism Authority of Thailand, said: “Bangkok remains largely open for business, although it may take longer time to travel around in downtown areas.

Meanwhile, the TAT Stockholm, Frankfurt and Rome offices have reported a "status quo" for flights from their respective markets. Thai Airways International and major tour operators are allowing a change of routing for travellers wishing to avoid Bangkok. All three offices reported a minimal cancellation of 1-2 per cent while the Frankfurt office said new bookings for Thailand continued to flow in from the German market.

The TAT attributed the result to factual news coverage, saying that many big-name international media agencies have tagged the demonstrations as a "festive-like gathering."

Mr. Thawatchai Arunyik, the Governor of the Tourism Authority of Thailand, said: "Bangkok remains largely open for business, although it may take longer time to travel around in downtown areas. Tourists are advised to use public transport such as the skytrain, the subway and boat services. Nonetheless, despite the peaceful nature of the protests, we still would like to recommend that tourists avoid the rally areas, just to be on the safe side."

According to statistics released by the Ministry of Tourism and Sports, Thailand welcomed 26.7 million international tourists in 2013, a 19.6 per cent increase over 2012.

Revenues from tourist trips to Croatia likely to exceed EUR 7 bn

ZAGREB, 3.1.2014.

Revenues from visits of foreign tourists to Croatia in the first nine months of 2013 totalled EUR 6.59 billion, up 4.7% from the corresponding period in 2012, according to preliminary figures released by the Croatian National Bank (HNB).

The HNB reports that the statistics indicate that revenues from foreign visits for the entire year 2013 are likely to exceed seven billion euros, for the first time since 2008.

Tourism Minister Darko Lorencin believes that it is realistic to expect a rise in revenues from the tourism and hospitality industry in 2013 compared to 2012.

Those revenues are not likely to reach a record high 2008 result of EUR 7.46 billion, but they may exceed 7.1 billion.

Excitement over river cruising is adding to Europe's overall allure for those taking cruise vacations in 2014; combined with European deep water cruises, the continent's cruise destinations rank second only to the Caribbean among Cruise Holidays clientele. Furthermore, Amsterdam, The Netherlands, and Budapest, Hungary, are emerging as river cruising's top destinations. Additionally, cruisers will eagerly wait 11 more months until the most anticipated ship of 2014 begins welcoming cruise passengers.
